Singapore – Toku, a prominent Singapore-listed Customer Experience (CX) software firm, has officially announced the launch of Makimoto, a gr...
Key Launch Details: The Makimoto "Kawa" Release
The inaugural release of the project, titled Makimoto Kawa, is scheduled for July 1, 2026, and will be hosted locally in Singapore. The initiative is structured to deliver critical AI capabilities in phases: Initial Release (Kawa): Focuses on real-time and post-conversation Transcription APIs, essential for modern contACT centers and conversational analytics.
Future Roadmap: Toku plans to introduce a self-hosted, containerized version of the software, followed by country-specific releases to address local nuances.
Licensing: The orchestration layer—the software coordinating the AI components—will be released under the MIT license, encourAGIng broad adoption and community collaboration.
A primary driver for Makimoto is the increasingly complex landscape of data privacy and residency regulations in markets such as Singapore, Indonesia, and Vietnam. Global AI providers often process data outside of these jurisdictions, creating compliance risks for local enterprises. By offering a locally hosted, open-source solution, Toku provides a "safe harbor" for APAC businesses, ensuring that sensitive customer audio and transcripts remain within regional borders. This APProach transforms regulatory hurdles into a competitive differentiator. Strategic Implications: Solving the Margin Problem
The launch of Makimoto also addresses Toku's internal financial strategy. In FY2025, Toku saw its gross profit margin contract from 27.4% to 24.3%, largely due to a shift toward lower-margin "Usage" revenue (which comprised 68.8% of sales). Moving Up the Value Chain: Makimoto represents a pivot from a connectivity-led usage business to a higher-margin software and AI layer.
Monetization: While Toku began charging for AI capabilities in FY2025, revenue remained immaterial. This open-source model aims to drive adoption of the underlying infrastructure, creating new avenues for monetization.
This initiative aligns with Toku's broader expansion into the Middle East and Latin America, regions that share similar data sovereignty concerns. To support the development and community growth of Makimoto, Toku is actively hiring, opening 10 graduate roles in Singapore across engineering, developer relations, and community management.
