xAI has officially expanded its voice AI capabilities with the introduction of Grok Custom Voices and a new Voice Library. This update allows users to generate unique, personalized AI Voice Skins (voice_id) by recording their own audio, which can then be integrated into the Grok Text-to-Speech (TTS) or Voice Agent APIs. These tools are designed for a wide range of APPlications, including automated customer service Agents, content creation, video game charACTer dialogue, and audiobook nARRation.

🛡️ Security-First Verification

Unlike simple audio upload tools, Grok Custom Voices prioritizes security and identity verification to prevent misuse. The system employs a rigorous validation process:
  • Live Verification: Users must read specific short phrases aloud.

  • STT & Biometric Matching: The system uses Speech-to-Text (STT) for real-time transcription and compares the speaker characteristics of the verification recording agAInst the full audio Sample.

  • Anti-Spoofing: A voice skin is only generated after the system confirms the user is the same person in both recordings, effectively preventing the cloning of third-party voices from existing audio CLIps.

🌍 Availability and Pricing Structure

Currently, the Custom Voices feature is available exclusively to users in the United States (excluding Illinois due to specific biometric privacy regulations).
  • User Limits: Users can create up to 30 custom voices for free via the console.

  • Enterprise Access: The ability to create voices via API is currently restricted to Enterprise teams.

  • Cost: Creating a custom voice is free of charge. However, using the voice via API incurs Standard usage fees:

    • Realtime API: $3.00 per hour

    • Text-to-Speech API: $4.20 per 1 million characters
