Virgin Voyages has introduced Rovey, the cruise industry’s first Agentic AI crew assistant, at Google Cloud Next in Las Vegas in April 2026. Developed in partnership with Google Cloud, Rovey represents the inaugural launch under Project Ruby, the brand’s enterprise-wide AI initiative designed to eliminate friction across the entire passenger journey.
Built on google Cloud’s Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform and powered by Gemini models and BigQuery, Rovey evaluates itinerary details, timing, pricing, destination combinations, and onboard experiences to assist travelers with complex decisions. The assistant blends model Intelligence with Virgin Voyages’ structured data and deep domain expertise to deliver guidance that feels personal rather than generic. The engineering team prioritized richer, contextually Informed responses over raw speed, ensuring Rovey behaves like a seasoned crew member rather than a generic chatbot. The outcome is a more confident booking path for a high-consideration purchase that often overwhelms travelers.
Context-aware guidance rooted in crew expertise
Rovey is designed to respond as a Skilled crew member would, guided by a central question: what would an experienced team member know about this passenger’s thinking, and when should they offer what? This principle shapes every architectural decision. The assistant interprets intent, weighs trade-offs, and recommends next best ACTions based on what a traveler has already explored. Personalized recommendations extend beyond the voyage itself to Shore Things excursions, matching suggestions to indiVidual interests and timing.
Andy Schwalb, Chief Technology Officer at Virgin Voyages, noted: “The Partnership with Google Cloud gave us both the infrastructure to answer sailor questions at scale and the intelligence to make every answer feel like it is tailored for that specific traveler. What we built reflects a decade of thinking about how technology should serve the guest experience rather than be layered on top of it.”
Persistent planning state for complex choices
Unlike traditional chatbots that surface the closest match from a static knowledge base before resetting, Rovey maintains a persistent planning state across each interaction so the conversation evolves continuously. If a traveler is comparing cabin categories, the assistant tailors the dialogue to that decision; if they have not yet chosen a departure region, Rovey reframes the conversation to nARRow options. A traveler who has been exploring Shore Things for several days receives different Prompts than someone at the start of discovery, with context preserved so guidance never repeats or contradicts previous steps. This continuity transforms Rovey into a decision-support system, reducing back-and-forth, cutting friction, and building confidence as travelers move toward booking.
Google Cloud partnership and product roadmap
Google Cloud supplies the underlying AI infrastructure and model capabilities, including Generative AI features through Gemini models, while Virgin Voyages contributes structured data, behavioral insights, and domain expertise drawn from complex booking environments. Sam Sebastian, Vice President of North America Regions at Google Cloud, stated: “By powering Rovey with our AI tools, Virgin Voyages is able to mitigate booking friction, deliver personalized travel recommendations at scale, and build deeper, more valuable connections with sailors.”
Virgin Voyages has announced plans for seven additional expressions of Project Ruby, each targeting distinct friction points from discovery through the voyage itself. All future releases will operate on the same platform architecture, extending the assistant’s context-aware APProach across new touchpoints and keeping the experience coherent rather than siloed.
Brand voice and experience-first design
Rovey has been carefully shaped to speak with the brand’s signature personality, ensuring helpfulness and tone remain consistent at scale. The assistant simplifies choices without feeling transactional. Billy Bohan Chinique, Vice President of Global Brand Marketing and AI transformation at Virgin Voyages, explained: “We have always built this brand from the inside out. Experience first. Everything else follows. Rovey is that philosophy applied to the one moment we could not previously reach at scale: the moment between a sailor thinking ‘I wonder if…’ and finally saying ‘I am going.’ Rovey lives in that space. And it sounds exactly like the brand it represents.”
The approach moves beyond keyword-retrieval conversation facades, maintaining a continuous, evolving dialogue that reflects the traveler’s unique context. As cruise planning grows more complex, Virgin Voyages’ agentic model dEMOnstrates how persistent state, domain data, and brand voice can combine to make AI feel like a genuine member of the crew.
