Australian data center operator IREN has announced a landmark partnership with NVIDIA to deploy up to 5 gigawatts of AI infrastructure, a deal that could see the chip giant invest up to US$2.1 billion in the company.
🤝 A Landmark Partnership for AI Infrastructure
On May 7, IREN (formerly Iris Energy) revealed a comprehensive strategic partnership with Nvidia AImed at accelerating the global deployment of next-generation AI infrastructure, often referred to as "AI fACTories." The collaboration will see the two companies work together to deploy Nvidia's full-stack DSX architecture across IREN's worldwide Data Center facilities. This design integrates computing, networking, software, and power to create highly efficient AI data centers.
The initial focus of this massive build-out is expected to be IREN's 2-gigawatt Sweetwater campus in Texas, which is poised to become a flagship deployment site for Nvidia's DSX architecture.
💰 Strategic Investment and Financial Structure
A key component of the agreement is a significant potential investment from Nvidia into IREN. The deal grants Nvidia a five-year warrant to purchase up to 30 million ordinary shares of IREN stock at a price of US$70 per share. This structure provides Nvidia with a pathway to invest as much as US$2.1 billion, signaling strong confidence in IREN's ability to deliver large-scale AI infrastructure.
In a separate but related agreement, IREN has also signed a five-year, US$34 billion contract to provide managed GPU cloud services to Nvidia. This service will support Nvidia's internal AI research and development workloads, with initial deployments taking place at IREN's data center in Childress, Texas.
📈 Market Reaction and Strategic Context
The announcement was met with a significant surge in IREN's stock price, which jumped 13% in after-hours trading, reflecting strong investor enthusiasm for the company's pivot from Bitcoin mining to a core AI infrastructure provider.
This partnership follows a series of multibillion-dollar agreements Nvidia has recently forged with other key Technology companies, including Coherent, Lumentum, and Corning, as it works to secure its supply chain and expand the AI ecosystem. IREN brings critical expertise in securing power, land, and manAGIng data center Operations, which complements Nvidia's leadership in AI systems and architecture.
