Meta has acquired Assured Robot Intelligence (ARI), a startup specializing in humanoid robotics, for an undisclosed amount, the social media giant confirmed. The acquisition AIms to strengthen Meta's push into embodied Artificial Intelligence and humanoid robot development.

"We acquired Assured Robot Intelligence, a company at the frontier of robotic intelligence designed to enable robots to underStand, predict, and adapt to human behaviors in complex and dynamic environments," a Meta spokesperson said in an emailed statement to TechCrunch.

ARI's team, including its co-founders, will join Meta's AI division, the Superintelligence Labs research unit. The startup had previously raised an undisclosed seed round from AI-focused venture firm AIX Ventures.

ARI was building foundation models for humanoid robots capable of performing physical labor such as household chores. Co-founder Xiaolong Wang previously worked as a researcher at NVIDIA and served as an associate professor at UC San Diego, earning multiple prestigious awards. Co-founder Lerrel Pinto, a former NYU faculty member, also co-founded Fauna Robotics, a kid-size humanoid startup that was acquired by Amazon last month. Pinto has likewise received numerous distinguished honors in the field.

The acquisition is expected to accelerate Meta's humanoid robotics ambitions. "This team, led by Lerrel Pinto and Xiaolong Wang, will bring deep expertise in designing models and frontier capabilities for robot control and self-learning, extending to whole-body humanoid control," the company noted. Meta researchers have been exploring humanoid robotics for years, with a leaked internal mEMO from last year revealing plans to develop consumer-oriented humanoid robots encompassing both AI models and hardware.

Even if Meta never launches a consumer humanoid product, a growing number of AI experts believe the path to artificial general intelligence (AGI) — the theoretical point where AI matches or surpasses human-level intelligence across all domains — will require training AI Models in the physical world, where robots learn through direct interACTion rather than data alone.

The ARI and Fauna Robotics acquisitions highlight a broader industry race, with market forecasts ranging Dramatically from Goldman Sachs' projection of 38billionby2035toMorganStanleysestimateof5 trillion by 2050 — a gap reflecting both the enormous potential and the uncertainty surrounding Technology still in its early stages.
