Google Photos Unveils AI-Powered Digital Closet Inspired by ‘Clueless’

Google Photos announced on Wednesday a new AI-driven feature that transforms photos of your clothing into a digital wardrobe, allowing you to mix and match pieces, create outfit ideas, and even virtually try on your looks. The concept drAWS clear inspiration from Cher’s iconic virtual closet in the 1995 film Clueless, where she effortlessly scrolled through her ensembles on a high-tech screen.

LeverAGIng Artificial Intelligence, the upcoming tool will automatically identify clothing and accessories in your Google Photos library and compile them into a searchable, categorized collection. Users will be able to filter items by type—such as tops, bottoms, jewelry, and more—then combine them to build new outfits. These outfit creations can be shared with friends or saved to a digital moodboard for occASIons like travel, date nights, work, or special events. An additional virtual try-on feature will let you preview how the assembled looks might APPear.

While Cher’s digital closet was a symbol of privilege, Google AIms to make this experience accessible to everyone through advances in AI, with the potential for the tool to improve over time. The company did not disclose detailed technical specifics but noted that the AI analyzes clothing and accessories in your existing photos. Though the system can work with candid, full-body images, users will likely achieve better results by intentionally photographing indiVidual gArments—much like Cher did.

The feature is not yet available but is scheduled to roll out to google Photos on Android later this summer, followed by an iOS release, where it will be housed under the “Collections” tab. It will enter a competitive space alongside existing digital wardrobe apps such as Acloset, Combyne, Pureple, Whering, and Alta.
