On May 18, anthropic officially announced the acquisition of Stainless, a New York-based startup specializing in automated software development kit (SDK) generation and mAIntenance tools. Founded in 2022 by former Stripe engineer Alex Rattray, Stainless has become a pivotal player in the AI infrastructure space, with its Technology widely utilized by major industry competitors, including OpenAI and Google.
While Anthropic did not publicly disclose the specific financial terms of the deal, recent reports indicate the transACTion is valued at over US$300 million. The startup is backed by prominent venture capital firms Sequoia Capital and Andreessen Horowitz.
As part of the acquisition, Anthropic plans to wind down all externally hosted Stainless products, including its popular SDK generator. However, the company has assured existing customers that they will retain full ownership of the SDKs they have already generated, along with the rights to modify and extend them as needed. This strategic move underscores Anthropic's commitment to vertically integrating its AI Infrastructure and strengthening the developer ecosystem for its claude platform.
