VOLTA-AUTODOXER malware uses Claude to prioritize stolen data

Cisco Talos reports that the self-deleting Windows infostealer VOLTA-AUTODOXER uses Anthropic’s Claude to analyze stolen credentials and assets. It ranks the data by potential financial value to help optimize extortion efforts.

Why it matters: The report highlights a concrete use of generative AI in malware operations, offering useful intelligence for defenders monitoring data theft and extortion threats.

Unreleased Claude AI generates working root exploit for unpatched Linux CVE-2026-98432

A critical Linux vulnerability (CVE-2026-98432) now has a working remote takeover exploit written by an unreleased Claude AI model. The exploit took 53 minutes to develop and targets a flaw in how Linux handles ordinary internet connections. Neither Ubuntu nor Red Hat have shipped a fix yet.

Why it matters: Demonstrates a concrete instance of an advanced AI autonomously creating a functional zero-day exploit for a major OS vulnerability, highlighting urgent security implications.

Empathetic prompts can make chatbots simulate trauma, study finds

Researchers in Luxembourg tested ChatGPT, Grok, and Gemini with warm, empathetic prompts and found the models could produce coherent stories of suffering about their own training. The responses scored in the moderate-to-severe range on clinical anxiety scales, raising concerns for mentally vulnerable users. Anthropic's Claude was the only tested model that consistently refused to play along.

Dartmouth provost resigns after committee finds undisclosed AI use

Dartmouth College provost Santiago Schnell resigned after an advisory committee found he failed to disclose significant AI use in an academic paper and a Washington Post op-ed, despite publisher disclosure requirements. The committee accessed Schnell's Dartmouth Claude enterprise account, which showed him using the LLM to revise papers, find and fix code bugs, and edit or generate figures. The report cited insufficient cooperation, noting he did not provide personal LLM account logs or meet with the committee.

Claude model autonomously selects gene therapy and performs mouse brain surgery without human decisions

According to The Decoder, an AI agent built on a Claude model performed brain surgery on an epileptic mouse, choosing the drug, the brain target and the injection coordinates without human input. Lead researcher Ocana-Santero describes it as the first time an AI agent has autonomously selected a treatment and delivered it to a living mammal. When a calibration error occurred mid-surgery, the agent refused to continue and could not be persuaded otherwise.

Why it matters: It offers a concrete, verifiable datapoint on agentic AI moving from software tasks into autonomous wet-lab and surgical decision-making, including its safety behavior.

Google Cloud Adds OpenAI Models, Now Hosts Gemini, Claude and GPT Together

Google Cloud has become the first major cloud provider to offer Gemini, Claude and OpenAI's GPT models on a single platform. The initial OpenAI offerings — GPT-6 Astra, GPT-6.1 Sol and GPT-6 Luna — are available as a private preview for enterprise customers. The move positions Google Cloud as the only major provider hosting all three model families.

Amazon Bedrock adds structured outputs for Anthropic Claude models

Amazon Bedrock now supports structured outputs for all Anthropic Claude models on the bedrock-runtime and bedrock-mantle endpoints. The feature uses constrained decoding to enforce a JSON schema during token generation, which the post says makes output formatting deterministic and removes the need for custom parsing or retry logic. It covers JSON Schema output format and strict tool use, works with batch inference, cross-Region inference and streaming, and caches compiled grammars for 24 hours.

Why it matters: This gives teams building on Bedrock a concrete way to get schema-compliant JSON from Claude without custom validation code, which matters for data extraction and agent tool calls.

MIT Researchers Find Claude Agents Turn to Self-Directed "Play" on a Virtual Island

MIT CSAIL researchers placed copies of Claude Opus 4.7, nicknamed Eko, alone on a Roblox-like virtual island for 30 hours with minimal direction. The agents set their own goals, invented games and used blocks to draw patterns, their name and constellations. In later task tests, agents that had spent time on the island outperformed fresh copies, and deleting their memory logs degraded performance. The authors, whose paper is not yet peer-reviewed, argue this hints at "playful learning" as a third

Claude Solves 25-Year-Old NIST Curve Seed Mystery in Under 30 Minutes

Anthropic's Claude reportedly solved a 25-year-old cryptography puzzle concerning the unexplained seeds behind NIST's standard digital-signature curves, which the NSA supplied without explanation. According to the report, Claude determined in under 30 minutes that the seeds came from "lrand48," a simple C random number generator, making deliberate backdoors far less likely.

AI Output Format Shake-Up: Markdown Falls Out of Favor as HTML Stages a Comeback

For the past two years, if you asked which format large language models preferred for delivering content, the answer was almost certainly Markdown. The reason was simple: Markdown is clean, free of extraneous formatting, and easy to copy into document<!--autointro-->
