LOOK: real footage, not AI-generated. Shot like a 1990s Japanese theatrical horror film on 35mm — visible film grain, shallow depth of field, low-key lighting with deep falloff, true skin texture with pores and fine lines. The amber of the oil lamps stands against a cold blue-gray falling from gaps above, warm against cold in one frame. CHARACTER — FEMALE STUDENT: one fictional adult woman in her early twenties. An oval face, dark eyes and black hair tied low, with loose strands framing her face. A burgundy jacket, black high-neck top, dark gray cargo trousers and black boots.
CHARACTER CONTINUITY: these are the only two students. Keep the faces, hair and clothes established in the first shot consistent throughout. Both students' faces and skin stay clean and unmarked to the end, except for the dark red flecks that hit her face at 0:24.
MASKED GROUP: one group, maintaining the following distinct mask designs throughout. A white Noh mask with only a pierced mouth, a mask clustered from dozens of small white faces, a carved brown oval mask, a silver beaked mask of joined metal plates, a red mask with square eye holes, a riveted white helmet mask, a corroded bronze disc mask, a large bird-skull white mask — no two alike. Layered black, ink-burgundy and aged off-white garments, bare feet. Bare faces never revealed, no new members.
LOCATION: only one old Japanese timber ritual hall — dark wooden floorboards, an octagonal sunken pit at the center, a rope hung with bronze bells dropping from the ceiling into the pit, weathered planks laid radially in a ring around it, candles and oil lamps along the floor and windows, thick timber pillars and a shrine altar at the back. The only lights are the candles' and lamps' amber and a blue-gray night seep from wall gaps. All the lamps snap out and back irregularly through the entire film — each dark beat lasts half a breath, the lit stretches longer.
TWO PHENOMENA: a pale gray-white membrane joining numerous human faces of different sizes and expressions hangs tangled between the beams across the full ceiling width from 0:00. The lamps' amber tints its underside and its shadow falls on the beams, so it reads as part of this place. The membrane sways slowly as if breathing, the faces each open and close their mouths at their own pace, and some look down — never frozen like statues. It sits one span lower each time the lamps snap back, and at 0:18 it is yanked up and vanishes. The dozens of arms appear only after 0:21.5 — long, gaunt, ash-pale arms with jutting knuckles and fingers bent like hooks. The two phenomena never share a frame and never merge.
DARK RED LIQUID: pours down with the arms at 0:21.5, splashing only where the arms pass, on the floor around the male student, and at 0:24 on the female student's face. The pool and the flecks on her face stay unerased to the end.
DIALOGUE: whispers and cries come from behind the camcorder; only the woman's scream is lip-synced. The whispers are frightened — breath mixed in, voice ends trembling.
(0:00–0:02.5) — The two students from behind, crouched hiding in the dark behind a thick pillar — the male aims the camcorder through the gap. Beyond them the masked group bows on the planks ringing the pit, to a low chant. Across the ceiling the face membrane sways breathing, mouths opening and closing. Their tense breaths tremble.
