Odysseus returns to Ithaca after twenty years, disguised as a beggar. As he approaches his palace, he meets his old dog Argos, abandoned and dying on a pile of dung. Argos recognizes him at once, weakly wags his tail, then dies. Odysseus looks away to hide his tears and keep his identity secret.
