Fei-Fei Li is A Chinese-American computer scientist, professor at Stanford University, and a leading voice in the global effort to build human-centered, ethical, and inclusive Artificial Intelligence. Widely recognized as one of the most influential figures in modern AI, she transformed computer vision through her creation of ImageNet—a dataset that catalyzed the deep learning revolution—and has since become a powerful advocate for responsible AI development and equitable access to technology.

Born in Beijing in 1976, Li moved to the United States as a teenager. She earned her PhD in Electrical Engineering from the California Institute of Technology and joined Stanford’s faculty in 2009. Frustrated by the lack of large-scale, real-world data to train visual recognition systems, she conceived ImageNet in 2007: a massive database of over 14 million labeled images spanning thousands of object categories. When paired with deep convolutional neural networks—most notably in the 2012 AlexNet breakthrough led by Geoffrey Hinton’s team—ImageNet became the benchmark that ignited the era of deep learning in computer vision.

Beyond technical innovation, Li has consistently emphasized the societal dimensions of AI. In 2017, she co-founded Stanford’s Human-Centered AI Institute (HAI), dedicated to advancing AI research, education, and policy that prioritizes human well-being, fairness, and transparency. She served as Chief Scientist of AI/ML at Google Cloud from 2017 to 2018, where she pushed for greater diversity in tech and launched initiatives like AI for Social Good.

In 2024, Li co-founded World Labs, a pioneering startup focused on spatial intelligence—a next-generation AI paradigm that enables machines to understand and reason about the 3D physical world, bridging the gap between digital models and real-world environments. This work aims to empower robots, augmented reality systems, and AI Agents with a more grounded, embodied understanding of space and context.

A passionate educator and public communicator, Li has delivered widely viewed TED Talks, advised governments on AI policy, and championed the inclusion of women and underrepresented groups in STEM. Her memoir, The Worlds I See, offers a compelling narrative of her journey from immigrant student to AI pioneer.

Through visionary research, institutional leadership, and unwavering moral clarity, Fei-Fei Li has helped shape not only how machines see—but how society should guide the future of intelligent technology.
